10 of America's most-thrilling summer animal migrations
Purple martins are the largest North American swallow. From the end of June to early August, an estimated 1 million purple martins arrive on Lake Murray, swooping through the sky at sunset. The lake is 41 miles long and 14 miles at its widest point, encompassing 620 miles of shoreline. Boaters can drive to the middle of the lake -- the largest purple martin sanctuary in North America -- or embark on a cruise that showcases the purple martins.
